Fall Lake Entry BWCA Canoe Trip Route

Just a few miles west of our Moose Lake base, you'll see Fall Lake. This BWCA canoe trip entry point can lead you into some of the finest fishing of the canoe country. A short paddle across Fall Lake takes you to an 80 rod portage round Newton Falls and into Newton Lake. Travel north and you'll find Pipestone Falls on the far end of the lake. A 90 rod portage will take you around this moving water. You're now in Pipestone Bay of Basswood Lake. Almost everyone's heard of Basswood Lake. Several state record fish have been taken out of this famous lake. Walleye, northern pike, smallmouth, pan fish, and lake trout abound. This makes a dandy basecamp lake for the serious fisherman or serious relaxer! At the northwest end of the lake, you'll hear the roar of Upper Basswood Falls. Follow the river into Crooked Lake. A one mile portage (340 rods) starts the journey. You'll also encounter several smaller portages along the remainder of the river. Beautiful falls, scenery, pictographs and great fishing can be found as you travel the Basswood River. Make your route into a nice loop by exiting out through Mudro Lake or the Moose River (see Mudro to Moose River trip).

If you head east on Basswood Lake, you may decide to make a loop right back to our base on Moose Lake. No portages as you travel the Canadian Border through Basswood Lake. Several smaller lakes south of Basswood offer good fishing and protection from the weather if Mother Nature isn't cooperating with your plans. An 85 rod portage from Basswoods Hoist Bay leads you into Good Lake which has only two campsites. A 100 rod portages takes you from Good to Indiana Lake and then a short 15 rod haul takes you into Wind Bay. You'll have a 130 rod hike from Wind Bay (of Basswood) into Wind Lake. This lake offers excellent largemouth and northern pike fishing. Travel out of the south end of Wind lake with a 175 rod portage right back into Moose Lake. If you prefer not to make these portages, simply head to the east end of Basswood Lake and cross at Prairie Portage. We can pick you up at this point with our towboats or you can paddle the "Moose Lake Chain" of Sucker, Newfound and Moose Lake, right to our dock. View Map 1 View Map 2
